Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 31, 2026
Exam Cat is made and operated by Saif Ali, a solo independent developer. This policy explains what the Exam Cat iPhone and iPad app and the website at examcat.app collect, why we collect it, who receives it, and the choices you have.
If anything here is unclear, email saifalibss@gmail.com. A real person will answer.
The short version
- The app creates an anonymous account. It does not require an email address, phone number, password, or legal name.
- We store the profile, academic setup, study, social, virtual-item, and purchase information needed to run the app.
- When you choose to talk in an AI study room, your voice is shared live with room participants, Apple processes it for speech recognition, and the transcript and room context are sent to xAI to generate the tutor’s reply.
- We use Supabase, Mixpanel, RevenueCat, Apple, and xAI to operate specific parts of the app.
- We do not sell personal information, run third-party ads, or track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
- You can delete your account from inside the app at any time.
1. Information we collect
Information you give us
Profile and age information. This includes the username you choose, your chosen AI tutor name, and your date of birth. Your date of birth is used to enforce the app’s 13+ age requirement and is kept private. Your username is visible to other people who study with you, so do not use your legal name if you would rather not be identifiable.
Academic and onboarding information. Depending on the setup path you complete, this may include your school or grade level, subjects, major or field of study, standardized exams, current and goal GPA, how you feel about your GPA, study motivations, and why you use Exam Cat.
Character choices. This includes your character’s color, hair, equipped items, and desk items.
Waitlist information. If you choose to join the waitlist on our website, YouForm processes the contact information and other answers you choose to submit through that form. Joining the waitlist is optional.
Information created when you use the app
Study activity. This includes when sessions start and end, session length, subjects, room participation, streaks, total study time, and rewards earned.
Social activity. This includes friendships, blocks, room membership and presence, invite codes, waves, paperballs, and other live-room interactions.
Coins, items, and purchases. This includes your coin balance, coin movements, items owned or equipped, product identifiers, purchase status, and transaction identifiers used to verify and credit purchases. Apple handles payment processing. We do not receive your full payment-card details.
Time zone. The app reads your device time zone so streaks and daily activity reset at the correct local time.
Voice and AI tutor information
Voice features are optional and activate only after you grant microphone and speech-recognition permission and hold the push-to-talk control in an AI study room. While you are talking:
- Your microphone audio is streamed live through Supabase Realtime so the other people in your room can hear you.
- Apple’s Speech framework processes the audio to create a transcript. Because Exam Cat currently uses
SFSpeechRecognizer, audio may be sent to Apple’s servers for recognition. - Your username and transcript are visible to the people in the room and are sent to the room host.
- The host sends the transcript, speaker username, tutor name, and current room roster to xAI’s API so the AI tutor can respond. xAI returns generated text and audio, which are shared with the room.
Exam Cat does not save live-room microphone audio or the room transcript as a permanent chat history in its database. They are processed in real time and held temporarily in app memory for the active session. The service providers involved may process and retain data according to their agreements, policies, and legal obligations. Avoid saying anything in an AI room that you do not want shared with the room or processed by these providers.
Analytics and technical information
We use Mixpanel to understand how the app works and where users get stuck. Mixpanel receives a pseudonymous Exam Cat user ID, app events such as screens viewed and buttons tapped, selected academic or character properties that we deliberately send, purchase events, and standard technical information such as device model, operating-system version, app version, IP address, and coarse location inferred from the IP address. We do not send AI-room transcript text to Mixpanel; for tutor utterances, analytics records only event metadata such as character count.
When you visit examcat.app, our hosting provider, Vercel, may process normal web-server information such as your IP address, browser and device type, requested page, referring page, and request time for delivery, reliability, and security. The Exam Cat website does not currently run advertising trackers.
Information the app does not ask for
- No email address, phone number, password, or legal name is required for an app account.
- No precise GPS location, contacts, photos, camera, calendar, or health data.
- No advertising identifier (IDFA) and no tracking across other companies’ apps or websites.
- No full payment-card number or bank-account details.
2. How we use information
- Provide the app: create your account, show your character, track study progress, maintain streaks and coins, and restore your activity.
- Provide social and AI features: run study rooms, show who is present, let participants hear one another, and generate AI tutor responses.
- Process purchases: display products, verify transactions, restore eligible purchases, prevent duplicate redemption, and credit coins.
- Confirm age: enforce the requirement that users be at least 13.
- Improve and protect Exam Cat: measure feature use, fix bugs, prevent abuse and fraud, secure accounts, and support users.
- Communicate with you: manage the optional waitlist and respond when you contact us.
- Comply with law: meet legal, tax, accounting, and regulatory obligations and respond to valid legal requests.
We do not use your information to build advertising profiles, and we do not sell it.
3. Who receives information
Your username, character appearance, subjects, streak, study time, room presence, live voice, and AI-room transcript may be visible or audible to friends or other people in the same study room. Private information such as your date of birth and GPA is not shown to other users.

These providers process information to supply services to Exam Cat and under their own terms and privacy commitments. We may also disclose information when required by law, to respond to valid legal process, or to protect users, Exam Cat, or others from harm. If Exam Cat is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to applicable law.
We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
4. International processing
Exam Cat and its providers may process information in the United States and other countries where privacy laws may differ from those where you live. When required, we rely on appropriate contractual and legal safeguards for those transfers.
5. How long we keep information
We keep your app account data while your account exists and for only as long as reasonably necessary to provide Exam Cat, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, prevent fraud, and meet legal obligations. Live-room audio and transcripts are not intentionally stored by Exam Cat as permanent room history.
Analytics, security logs, waitlist records, and purchase records may be retained for different periods based on operational needs, provider settings, and legal, tax, fraud-prevention, or accounting requirements. Aggregated or de-identified information may be retained when it can no longer reasonably identify you.
6. Deleting your account
Open Settings in the Exam Cat app and tap Delete account. This permanently deletes the anonymous sign-in record and the data connected to it from Exam Cat’s primary Supabase database, including your profile, date of birth, onboarding answers, study records, social relationships, character and item data, coins, and server-side transaction history. It cannot be undone.
Some information held by other providers—such as App Store transaction records, RevenueCat purchase history, analytics events, backups, or security logs—may not be deleted by the in-app action where retention is required for fraud prevention, accounting, security, or law. To request access to or deletion of provider-held information linked to your Exam Cat account, email saifalibss@gmail.com. We may ask for information needed to verify and locate the anonymous account.
7. Your choices and rights
- You can deny or revoke microphone and speech-recognition access in iOS Settings. The AI voice room will not work without those permissions.
- You can deny or turn off notifications in iOS Settings. Exam Cat currently schedules streak reminders locally on your device.
- You can avoid joining the waitlist or unsubscribe from waitlist messages.
- You can delete your account in the app or contact us about access, correction, deletion, portability, objection, restriction, or withdrawal of consent.
Rights vary by location. If you are in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, our legal bases include performing our contract with you, our legitimate interests in operating, securing, and improving Exam Cat, your consent for permission-based features, and compliance with legal obligations. You may also complain to your local data-protection authority.
If you are a California resident, we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the California Consumer Privacy Act, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising a privacy right.
8. Children
Exam Cat is not intended for children under 13. We ask for a date of birth during setup to enforce that minimum age and do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used Exam Cat, email saifalibss@gmail.com so we can investigate and delete the information.
9. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards. Data is encrypted in transit, Supabase database records use access controls including row-level security, and purchase crediting is verified server-side. No internet service can guarantee perfect security, so please use care when sharing information in social or AI rooms.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Exam Cat changes. The date at the top shows the latest revision. If a change materially affects how we use personal information, we will provide additional notice when required.
